How to Play Blackjack at Home (With Friends and Family)

Posted on January 30, 2023 by Mister Blackjack

Blackjack is not only easy to learn, it also offers you the chance to use strategy to increase your odds of winning. This blog post explains how to play blackjack at home with friends and family. Now, you can enjoy the thrill of the game without having to leave the comfort of your own home.

Setting Up a Home Blackjack Game

Here’s how I set up my home blackjack game:

First, I get a couple of decks of cards and find a flat surface to play on. A dining table or even a coffee table work just fine if you don’t have a traditional blackjack table lying around. Having extra decks of cards is always a good idea.

Next, I make sure everyone knows the basic rules for blackjack. Your goal is to have a hand with a higher point total than the dealer, without going over 21.

I assign someone to be the dealer. Often, this is me, as I’m the one most comfortable with the role. This can rotate with each round so that everyone gets a chance to deal and play.

I set betting limits. Determining the minimum and maximum bets for each round is best done with input from your guests. My mom and I used to play for no money at all.

Then the dealer starts by dealing two cards to each player, including themselves, with the cards dealt face-up for all to see.

Players can “hit” and take additional cards or “stand” and keep their current hand. The dealer also plays according to a set of rules, and the player with the best hand wins the round. In some home games, the dealer can decide how to play their hand using their judgment. This is a major difference between home blackjack and casino blackjack.

At my house, we keep track of the scores as we play. We like to know who’s ahead and who’s behind. We just keep a running tally on a whiteboard.

And that’s it. Setting up your home blackjack game isn’t any harder than this.

Understanding the Rules of Blackjack

Before you begin playing, it’s important to understand the basic rules of blackjack. The goal of the game is to have a hand with a higher point total than the dealer, but without going over 21.

The rules for home blackjack resemble the rules for casino blackjack. But there are a few key differences.

First, the goal is to have a hand with a higher point total than the dealer, without going over 21.

You also need to understand the hand values of the cards. Cards 2 through 10 are worth their face value, and face cards (jack, queen, king) are worth 10 points each. Aces can be worth either 1 or 11 points, depending on what works best for your hand.

In a casino, the dealer must follow strict rules on when to hit or stand. But usually, in a home game, the dealer can use their discretion when hitting or standing. This is one of those key differences I alluded to earlier.

Here’s an example:

The dealer can choose to stand on 17, like in a casino, or choose to hit on 17. This can make the game more challenging for the players.

And, in home blackjack games, you also have the flexibility to play with house rules. These might include how you handle options like “surrendering” or “splitting”.

Also, in a casino, players are usually required to play with chips. But at home, you can use any form of currency or even play for fun without any betting involved.

Finally, in a home game, players can also rotate being the dealer, giving everyone a chance to play that role.

And those are the basic rules for playing blackjack at home with your friends and family. Remember to have fun and get everyone to agree on the rules.

Assigning the Dealer Role

The dealer is responsible for shuffling and dealing the cards. So, choose someone who is comfortable with this role. This choice is one of the most important decisions you’ll make. The dealer can rotate with each round to give everyone a chance to play.

In a casino, the dealer is a professional, trained to deal the cards, follow strict rules, and maintain a high level of accuracy. However, in a home game, the dealer is usually just a volunteer.

When choosing a dealer for your home game, consider:

  • Knowledge of the game: The dealer should understand the basic rules and the different actions players can take (hit, stand, split, double, etc.).
  • Ability to shuffle and deal cards: The dealer should be comfortable handling cards and be able to shuffle and deal them accurately.
  • Good communication skills: The dealer should be able to explain the rules and answer questions during the game.
  • Fairness: The dealer should be unbiased and not favor any particular player.

It’s a good idea to rotate the dealer role among the players. This gives everyone a chance to deal. It also ensures that no one person is stuck dealing for the entire game.

In a home blackjack game, you can also assign a “co-dealer” to help the designated dealer to make sure all the rules are followed.

Remember, the role of the dealer is important. It’s crucial to choose someone who can manage the game in a fair, organized way.

Setting the Betting Limits in a Home Blackjack Game

Before starting, it’s important to set betting limits. This is how you determine the minimum and maximum bets for each round.

In a casino, betting limits are set by the house and posted at the tables. In a home game, though, you have the flexibility to set the limits according to the group’s comfort level.

When setting the betting limits for your home game, consider:

  • Budget: Set a limit that is within your budget and that of the other players. You don’t want anyone to feel uncomfortable or to end up in a financial bind.
  • Risk tolerance: Some players may be more comfortable with higher stakes. Others may prefer lower stakes. Make sure the limits are set to match the group’s risk tolerance.
  • Length of the game: Consider how long you want the game to last. Then set the limits accordingly. Set lower limits to have a longer game.
  • Betting structure: Decide whether you want to play with fixed betting limits or if you want to allow players to raise the stakes during the game.

The maximum bet is probably the most important part of this.

Dealing the Cards in a Home Blackjack Game

The dealer starts by shuffling the cards. Use any method you’re comfortable with, such as a riffle shuffle or an overhand shuffle. The cards must be well mixed before dealing.

Then deal two cards to each player, including yourself. Deal the cards face-up, so everyone can see what they have. (Some groups might want to deal the cards face-down, but this is the way I do it at my house.)

Start with the player to your left, and then move clockwise around the table. Each player gets two cards. In a casino, the dealer gives themselves one card face up, and another face down. In a home game, you can decide if you want to deal yourself one or two cards, face up or face down.

Make sure that the cards are dealt correctly. Also make sure that all players get the correct number of cards (2). Correct any mistakes immediately.

Finally, don’t forget to have fun and to maintain the pace of the game. You’re the one who sets the rhythm of the game. Be mindful of the time it takes each player to act.

Create a friendly atmosphere and enjoy a casual chat with your friends and family while dealing the cards.

Remember, dealing is an important role in the game. You should take it seriously, but also enjoy it.

Playing the Game of Blackjack at Home

Once everyone has their cards, players will have the opportunity to “hit” and take additional cards or “stand” and keep their current hand.

You are ready to learn the basics of the game. I cover the basic rules in a post on that subject elsewhere. But here’s a quick rundown as a refresher:

The objective of blackjack is to have a hand value as close to 21 as possible without exceeding it. Each player starts with two cards. The value of the hand is determined by adding up the values of the individual cards. The cards 2 through 10 are worth their face value, the face cards (jack, queen, and king) are worth 10. And an asce can be worth either 1 or 11.

Once all the players have their two cards, they have several options to choose from:

  • Hit: You can choose to take another card from the dealer in order to improve your hand. You can continue to hit as many times as you like. But if your hand value exceeds 21, you bust and lose your bet.
  • Stand: You can choose to keep the cards you have and not take any more.
  • Double down: If you feel confident in your hand and want to increase your bet, you can choose to double down. This option is usually only available on the first two cards. You must take one and only one more card.
  • Split: If you have two cards of the same value, you can choose to split them into two separate hands. You must place an additional bet for the second hand.

In a home game, you can also create your own rules. For example, you can allow players to surrender, which means giving up half of the bet. Or you can allow players to take insurance, which is a side bet that is made when the dealer’s upcard is an ace.

In a casino, the dealer follows a strict set of rules. For example, the dealer must hit on a hand value of 16 or less. And they must stand on a hand value of 17 or more. In a home game, you can decide if the dealer should follow these rules or if you want to change them.

Keeping Scores

Blackjack is a gambling game. And the way you keep score in a gambling game is with money. If you’re not playing with money, you can keep score with chips. Some groups might use a whiteboard, but it’s easier to just use chips.

I feel like you should use chips and real money regardless. Even if you’re playing for really low stakes, blackjack is more fun when there’s money on the line.

And one of the benefits of playing at home is being able to set the limits lower than you’d find at a casino. You can easily play a game where the minimum bet is 50 cents or a dollar, for example. Most casinos have a minimum bet of $5 or $10 even at their lowest stakes.

Conclusion

Blackjack is a fun and exciting game that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. By following these steps, you’ll be able to set up and play blackjack at home with friends and family in no time. Remember to have fun, and always play responsibly.
