The Basics of Blackjack (Rules and Gameplay)

Posted on January 15, 2023January 17, 2023 by Mister Blackjack

Today’s post covers the basics of blackjack. The game has been around for centuries, and it’s still as popular as ever. In fact, it’s the most popular table game in the casino. If you’re new to the game, don’t worry, I’ll break down the rules and gameplay in simple terms in this post.

Blackjack is a card game where the objective is to beat the dealer by having a hand value of 21 or as close to 21 as possible without going over. It’s a simple game, but it’s important to know the rules before you start playing. This post covers everything you need to know to get started on your blackjack journey.

Oh, by the way — apologies for not updating the blog more often. I’ve finally retired from my day job, so now I can give this blog the attention it deserves. Expect a lot more updates moving forward.

The Basic Rules for Blackjack Gameplay

In blackjack, your goal is to beat the dealer by having a hand value of 21 or as close to 21 as possible without going over. Each player gets two cards, and then they have the following options:

  1. Hit
  2. Stand
  3. Split
  4. Double down.

The cards have numerical values that are the same as the number on each card. All face cards (jacks, queens, or kings) count as 10. The ace can be either a 1 or 11, depending on which value is better for the player.

The first thing to do when playing blackjack is to place a bet. Once the bets are placed, the dealer deals two cards to each player and two cards to themselves, one face up and one face down. The players then look at their cards and decide whether they want to hit, stand, split or double down.

  1. Hitting means taking another card.
  2. Standings means keeping the cards as they are.
  3. Splitting means separating a pair of cards into two hands.
  4. Doubling down means doubling the bet and taking one more card.

If the player’s total exceeds 21, the hand loses immediately. That’s a bust.

The dealer then reveals their face-down card and follows a set of rules to determine the next move. They must hit if their hand value is under 17 and must stand if their hand value is 17 or higher. In some cases, the dealer must hit on a soft 17. A soft hand is a hand that includes an ace.

Once the dealer has completed their turn, the players’ hands are compared to the dealer’s. If the dealer busts, all players still in the game win. If the dealer does not bust, then the players’ hands are compared to the dealer’s, and whoever has a higher value without going over 21 wins. If the player and the dealer have the same value, it’s a push, and the player’s bet is returned.

Blackjack is a simple enough game to understand, but it’s important to know the rules and strategies before you start playing. It’s also important to know the variations of the game and the rules that apply to each one of them.

The Most Basics of Blackjack Basics: How to Signal Your Action to the Dealer

When playing blackjack, it’s important to know how to signal your choice of actions to the dealer. This is especially important when playing in a live casino, as it ensures that the dealer understands your intentions and acts accordingly.

When you want to hit, you can simply tap the table or make a “scratching” motion with your fingers.

If you want to stand, you can simply wave your hand over your cards or make a “stop” motion with your hand.

If you want to double down, you can place your extra chips next to your original bet and then make a “double down” motion with your fingers.

If you want to split your cards, you can place the extra chips next to your original bet and then separate the cards.

It’s also important to remember that when playing in a live casino, you should always keep your cards visible to the dealer. This  ensures that the dealer can easily see what cards you have and prevents any cheating or confusion.

It’s also important to pay attention to the table rules and the actions that are allowed in each casino, as they may vary. It’s always a good idea to ask the dealer or the floor supervisor if you’re unsure about anything. Good communication with the dealer will make your gameplay much smoother and enjoyable.

How to Improve Your Chances of Winning as a Blackjack Beginner

Beginners can improve their chances of winning at blackjack in several ways:

The first step to improving your chances of winning at blackjack is to understand the basic rules of the game. This includes understanding the value of each card, the objective of the game, and the different actions that you can take (hit, stand, split, and double down). Once you have a solid understanding of the rules, you can start to use basic strategy.

One of the most important strategies for beginners is to always follow the basic strategy chart. This chart is based on mathematical probability and is designed to help players make the best possible decisions in any given situation. By following the basic strategy chart, you can reduce the house edge and increase your chances of winning.

Another strategy that beginners can use is to manage their bankroll effectively. This means setting a budget for yourself and sticking to it. It’s important to avoid chasing losses and setting limits for yourself on both the amount you are willing to win and the amount you are willing to lose. This will help you avoid losing more money than you can afford to lose.

Additionally, beginners should also be aware of the different variations of blackjack and the rules that apply to each one of them. Some variations have different rules, such as the dealer must hit on soft 17 or the option to surrender, which can change the basic strategy. Knowing these variations will help you make better decisions and improve your chances of winning.

Finally, beginners should also be aware of the impact of the number of decks on the game, as it can affect the probability of certain events happening. Playing with fewer decks can decrease the house edge and increase your chances of winning.
